“Top 5 Ways to Reduce Fall Hazard Risk”

Kevin Wilcox joins Chris Payne and David Reynolds a short while after his 2015 FMCC webinar, “Top 5 Ways to Reduce Fall Hazard Risk”, where he delivers a systematic development against fall risk in five critical areas, applying prevention by design, training, and certified fall protection systems.

Kevin is a principal of LJB Inc. and a professional structural engineer, who is also a certified safety professional. He has more than 20 years’ experience in fall protection consulting, with expertise in fall hazard assessments, design and inspection of fall protection systems, and related training. Fall protection presents two conflicting realities: significant fall incidents don’t happen often, but when they do occur, they’re catastrophic and costly. The challenge, however, is that fall protection is complex. There are numerous regulations, standards, equipment options, training sources and priorities to consider when protecting workers. Kevin approaches fall protection in a practical way to minimize the complexity, while taking comprehensive action to protect people, projects, and business. In this podcast, Kevin talks about specifying fall protection to be provided by outsource organizations working in your facility. He then expands on specification to view fall protection as a system of understanding hazards, design, training, and practices – and oh yes, equipment. The point is, certified equipment is necessary, but hardly sufficient. Equipment is just one part of a certified system for safety from falling. Last, he briefly treats risk assessment, as possibly the part of fall protection that where the experienced safety professional can contribute uniquely.

Fall protection a straightforward quality of life and continuity of business issue, nothing less.

“Sustainability Metrics: A Tale of Two Companies”

At the time of this podcast on World FM Day, Lynn Baez and Alana Dunoff had just completed a webinar entitled Sustainability Metrics, A Tale of 2 Companies, where they focused on transforming business and operations data into a sustainability framework that their clients welcomed for its clarity and value. Communication and culture are key, we FMs often say. But, while the client’s goal is sustainability, getting from the object (records and data) to objectives (what can the client accomplish, and how) requires technical understanding, cultural acceptance, and much more.

Alana Dunoff, Strategic Facility Planner, of AFD Facility Planning, an FMP and IFMA Fellow, is an energetic, enthusiastic, speaker, teacher, and admitted data geek, after 22 years of facility planning and management. She has served on the IFMA Board of Directors.

Lynn Baez, with 14 years experience in environmental science and FM, currently serves on the IFMA Board, and with Cushman and Wakefield. Lynn, a CFM, SFP, and FMP, brings steady and frank insight on working with the client organization, and about the increasing significance of global conventions and standards toward sustainability and asset management.

“What do we know?” and “How do we translate knowledge into well informed decisions?” are the two questions giving rise to evidence based workplace management. The workplace arena is filled with opinions and anecdotal evidence, but big questions like “how does the workplace contribute to productivity growth?” or “Can we enhance employee health and well being in new workplace?” are easy to ask but hard to answer. Nevertheless workplace researchers are eager to develop reliable knowledge that helps to discuss such questions and inform decisions. What is the state of the art and science of knowledge development? What does the future hold?

Val Moraes of New Zealand and Adam Fang of China also participated in the webinar on World FM Day, but were not able to be present for this podcast. Their title, “The Importance of Leadership in Facilities & Asset Management – an FMCC Panel Discussion,” lead, in Graham’s view, to a few central points to ensure that the practice of FM can be viewed and experienced by top organizational leaders as one of several that are central to organizational value and well being, rather than simply regarding facilities as a recurring cost to be minimized. This podcast immediately followed their World FM Day webinar, “Everything You Wanted to Know About Social Media, But Were Too Afraid To Ask.” Markus, trained as an architect and commercial designer, has 25 + years as a senior consultant to major clients in implementation and use of software systems employed over the facility life cycle. Chris, also with over 25 years’ experience, focuses on adding value in the delivery of FM services, especially through innovation.
Internet, portable devices, and the Internet of Things are carrying FM forward in promising ways, but at the same time consume time and energy in a flood of communications and information. In this brief podcast, Chris and Markus acknowledge the problem from the point of view of the individual FM, especially if you are a consultant. They quickly follow with approaches already underway by organizations to use current generation social media to help with responsiveness and reducing the role of e-mail. Turning to the Internet of Things, they see large potential, but security remains an issue. Is your refrigerator forwarding SPAM, instead of just keeping it cold?

Chris Payne of FMCC interviews Geoff Williams and Nicole Lobb following their April 2, 2015 FMCC webinar. Geoff and Nicole have adopted in their own organization a view of FM as a value adding business unit with a product to determine, budget, produce, market, and evolve. This postures FM as a small business, requiring constant assessment of revenues and expenses that reflect value to the rest of the organization.

Does this seem a stretch for FM, traditionally viewed as a cost center to be minimized, with attendant costs avoided? Perhaps, but advantages for FM and the organization accrue from adaptive, innovative, forward thinking and doing, where FM must realize, budget, and market what amounts to a product line that adds value.

The IFMA FMP core curriculum provides a knowledge base toward bringing about FM in this way, and widely available academic courses build and reinforce the concepts and practices to support an FM presence in organizational management.
