Overview:

The Facility Management industry is an emerging service area, which is determinedly growing into a sizeable and influential industry sector in Nigeria and other parts of Africa as a consequence of more widespread outsourcing of non-core business activities, upturn in the world economy, growing emphasis on modernization of office spaces, revival in construction and the real estate industries and Privatization initiative of Government. Today as governments globally struggle to increase energy efficiency, reduce waste and create jobs now more than ever, underscores the need for education and training of FM professionals in order to create common sense public policy fully able to improve the health, safety and reliability of the built environment.

In the 111th Congress, IFMA led a coalition of industry groups in support of the Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act. Signed into law by President Obama in December 2010. The bill’s premise was simple: if buildings are maintained properly by trained and certified facility managers, buildings will perform better at lower cost, reduce energy use and ultimately be worth more at their time of disposition. In creating and maintaining high-performance buildings capable of significantly reducing energy and water use while promoting worker health and safety, a well-educated, experienced and trained facility management staff is essential.

However, despite the huge potential offered by the FM industry many emerging market countries including Nigeria is yet to shift focus towards the development of this industry sector The challenge is that FM is yet to be recognized as a strategic business enabler and contributor to the nation and business productivity, profitability, and occupants’ health and safety.

The lack of recognition of the FM profession in Nigeria translates to lack of professionalism, lack of quality FM education and lack of standards in the industry.

Learning Objectives:

  • To highlight the valuable contributions sound FM has made and is making to sustainable infrastructural development, productive, safe, healthy and secure work environment and local and global economics.
  • To demonstrate the value for investment in education and training by government and business leaders in the FM profession
  • To draw attention of decision makers on the need for a national agenda of the FM profession in Nigeria
  • To showcase FM industry potential as a contributor to National Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
