FMCC Webinar: “Transformational Information for the Facility Manager”

Date: August 28, 2014
“Transformational Information for the Facility Manager”

Overview:
The facilities industry is slowly moving into the information age and is taking advantage of the opportunities and value of an information rich facility. Information that is gathered one time at its point of inception and made available to all stakeholders throughout the life of a facility. The opportunities are boundless, but the resources are not. The question to you is “Do you get on board this train while it is in the station or jump on later while it is speeding past?” BIM is the catalyst that can truly transform the facilities industry and deliver validated information during commissioning for the facility manager. The savings are substantial, and the change profound, but change must occur for it to happen. Deke Smith, co-author of BIM: A Strategic Implementation Guide for Architects, Engineers, Constructors and Real Estate Asset Managers, Executive Director of buildingSMART alliance and member of the Executive Committee of buildingSMART International will discuss the steps needed to maximize the opportunity information provides.

Learning Objectives:
• You will learn about the opportunities BIM can provide
• The changes that must occur to leverage the information
• The effort underway worldwide making it happen

Deke Smith seeks leaders for the transformation of the facilities and infrastructure industries to coordinate the benefits of modeling, simulation, information, lean construction, resiliency, sustainability, and physical and cyber security.

Throughout almost forty years of leadership, he has led the development and advancement of national and international information technology standards and models essential for delivering tomorrow’s cost-effective, energy efficient and sustainable high performance buildings.

Recognized as key new tools for the future of architecture and the capital facilities industry, the effective use of building information modeling (BIM) and interoperable data transfer technologies depend on standards and models developed through his pioneering and leadership. The most notable of these are:
– National BIM Standard – United States
– United States National CAD Standard
– AIA CAD Layering Guidelines
– Whole Building Design Guide

As NIBS’ FIC Chair, he initiated the development of the National CAD Standard (NCS), a joint publication of the American Institute of Architects, the Construction Specifications Institute and NIBS. In the early 1990’s, he was an author of both the first and second editions of the AIA CAD Layering Guidelines, which brought consistency and rationale to the use of CAD. The NBIMS-US, is the basis for coordinated transformation across the facility and infrastructure life cycles. This approach will profoundly reduce costs, reduce time for delivery and help manage our natural resources.

In the late 1970s, Deke brought the first CAD systems to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and subsequently managed the $500M Facilities CAD2 federal procurement: the first true demonstration of interoperability. Deke was a leader in implementing the Tri-Service (Army/Navy/Air Force) CAD/GIS Technology Center and drafted its charter. The Center, under his guidance, helped advance interoperability and other concepts to our industry.
