FMCC President’s BLOG – May/June 2023

I was talking with a graduate student who has been researching workplace trends. She advised that for many companies, staff always working from home or even under a hybrid home-office scenario has resulted in a loss of productivity. I asked for more specific examples of what companies, what industries, and I mostly got back ‘it depends’ and ‘I’m still doing research.’

Work from home is not going away because for one, it has been with us long before the pandemic occurred. However, the extent of the shift to the home from the office is still being debated and my bet is that it cannot be one size fits all (and that goes for both the employer and the employee, as well as the industry). Add the work from home debate to new arguments about how artificial intelligence (AI) will impact the workplace and in general employment.

As part of our mandate, the FM Consultants Council plans a forum every May. This year we are working on a topic that helps us think about the issues mentioned above and how it affects facility management professionals and consultants. Our forum title is ‘The Future of Work.’ Please keep on the lookout for more information on this proposed event!
