“Technology – Enabler or Disabler”

Facilities management practitioners, building owners and service providers are increasingly using technology to assist meet stakeholders objectives and expectations and ensure facilities are operating effectively and efficiently. Whilst having many benefits there are also many challenges and implications in utilising technology that need to be addressed including the impact on personal interaction and communication, privacy, expectation management and data management etc. In addition with the rapidly changing technological environment and increased choices the need to carefully select the most appropriate option to ensure that an efficient and cost effective solution is chosen is a key decision for the end user.
Key to ensuring an effective outcome is to have a thorough understanding of the objectives and outcomes sought and to apply that to the scoping and choice of the appropriate technology combined with robust procedures to ensure any disabling impacts on the organisation or individuals are minimised.
- Discuss the role that technology plays in the strategic, tactical and operational aspects of facilities management
- Discuss the types of technology and rate of change and innovation.
- Discuss the challenges and implications of technology on FM practitioners and facility owners
- Understand the benefits, opportunities and challenges of technology in assisting enabling the facility manager to effectively and efficiently carry out their role.
Geoff Parnell is a joint founding Director of A&O Facility Management. He has extensive experience in the strategic, tactical and operational aspects of facilities management. Geoff has held senior executive roles in a wide range of organisations.
He is a past chair and life member of the Facility Management Association of Australia, a member of IFMA and the IFMA Facility Management Consultants Council, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Geoff has delivered a variety of papers and presentations on asset and facilities planning and service delivery strategies to both national and international conferences and seminars in Hong Kong, Malaysia, United Kingdom, United States, France and Australia.
He lecturers in Facilities Management at Curtin University.
